Travel Tips

Navigating Hong Kong is a breeze if you know the ropes. Grab an Octopus Card for tap-and-go access to all transport, follow designated taxi queues, and avoid weekday rush hours on the MTR. The iconic Star Ferry remains the cheapest, most scenic way to cross Victoria Harbour.

The Essential Octopus Card

The stored-value Octopus Card is your golden ticket. It saves you from digging for exact change and works across all public transit.

If you have an iPhone or Apple Watch, you can download the Octopus App for Tourists and add a digital card directly to your device.

Octopus Card

Where to buy: Purchase physical cards at any MTR Customer Service Centre or Airport Express counter.

Digital convenience: Add Octopus to your iPhone or Apple Watch with the Octopus App for Tourists.

Usage: Simply tap on and tap off at card readers. It can also be used at many retail outlets for quick everyday purchases.

MTR (Mass Transit Railway)

Hong Kong’s MTR is the fastest and most efficient way to get around the city.

Etiquette: Eating, drinking, and chewing gum are strictly prohibited inside stations and trains.

Hours: Trains generally start around 6:00 AM and many stations operate until around 1:00 AM, depending on the line and station.

Peak hours: Try to avoid 8:00 AM–9:30 AM and 5:30 PM–7:30 PM on weekdays if you want a more comfortable ride.

Taxi Rules & Tips

Taxis in Hong Kong are affordable and regulated.

Color matters: Red taxis serve most urban areas and the airport, green taxis operate in the New Territories, and blue taxis serve Lantau Island.

Flagging & stands: Hail them on the street where permitted, or use designated taxi stands at hotels and major transport points.

Paying: Always insist the driver uses the meter. Most drivers accept cash, and some also take Octopus or digital payments.

Surcharges: Expect extra charges for tolls and luggage, with baggage surcharges listed at HK$6 per piece in current official fare guidance.

Receipts: Always ask for a machine-printed receipt. It is the best proof if you need to report a lost item or dispute a fare.

Ferries & Trams

For slower, more scenic travel, take advantage of Hong Kong’s historic transit options.

Star Ferry: The cheapest harbour crossing and one of the best ways to enjoy views of Victoria Harbour.

Ding Dings (Hong Kong Trams): These classic double-decker trams on Hong Kong Island are a local experience in themselves. Board from the back and pay the flat fare as you exit from the front using your Octopus card.[web:23]

Local Travel Tools & Navigation

Apps: Download Google Maps for excellent public transport routing and walking directions. If you need a private car, the Uber app also operates in Hong Kong.

Language: While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, carrying your hotel’s address written in Chinese characters on your phone is highly recommended for smoother communication with taxi drivers.
